Course Overview 

This online course aims to provide the skills and knowledge required to establish, maintain and evaluate an organisation’s work health and safety (WHS) policies, procedures and programs in a work area to ensure a safe workplace, according to WHS legislative requirements. Notably, The course will also help participants understand OHS aspects of aviation.

Assessment Online – Students will access their course online, and complete assessment at their own pace.

This course provides the skills and knowledge required to establish, maintain and evaluate an organisation’s work health and safety (WHS) policies, procedures and programs in a work area to ensure a safe workplace, according to WHS legislative requirements. It takes a systems approach and addresses compliance with relevant legislative requirements.

Additionally, this course provides a comprehensive overview of OH&S Management Systems and follows the structure and recommendations of the ISO 45001:2018 (Occupational Healthy & Safety Management Systems) standard.

The course applies to those working in a range of contexts who have, or are likely to have, responsibility for WHS as part of their broader management role. It is relevant for people with obligations under WHS laws, for example persons conducting a business or undertaking (PCBUs) or officers, as defined by WHS laws.

This course is designed for

  • People who are required to undertake internal and external audits of OH&S management systems

This Nationally Recognised course contributes to the AVI50119 Diploma of Aviation (Aviation Management). Upon successful completion of the course and all assessments, participants will receive the following unit of competency:

1. Formal Pre-Requisites

There are no formal prerequisites for this course. However, to ensure a greater understanding of the audit process and the content covered within this course, we recommend you attend our Safety and Lead Auditor Course, before commencing this course.

If the participant wishes to become a certified auditor under this Exemplar Global auditor scheme, they must have also successfully completed the Safety and Lead Auditor Course (Exemplar Global – QM, TL, AU) at a minimum to apply for Exemplar Global recognition and certification.

2. Digital prerequisites

All students will require access to a computer (with Adobe Reader and Microsoft Word installed) and a reliable Internet connection. You must be comfortable using technology to locate information and research topics – for example, to find a copy of a regulation using Google – and in using the main features and functions of digital tools (such as word processing programs, email and printers) to complete work tasks.

3. LLN prerequisites

All students must possess the following language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) abilities:

  1. Learning ability: You must be comfortable using your experience to reflect on ways that variables impact outcomes, and identify future improvements. You must be self-directing, able to manage your own learning and be able to plan and balance multiple requirements and meet deadlines.
  2. English reading ability: You must be comfortable reading and interpreting a range of documentation relevant to the subject – this includes organisational policies and procedures and assessment instructions.
  3. English writing ability: You will be required to draft and develop various documents using appropriate format and language for the context and the audience. You must be comfortable writing documents such as formal documents, including instructions, information updates and completing report templates.
  4. English speaking ability: You will be required to participate in verbal exchanges using clear language and appropriate tone and syntax to provide relevant information. You must be able to use active listening and questioning to elicit views and opinions of others.
The main objectives of this course are to gain an understanding of:

  • WHS in the aviation sector
  • Tools for identifying hazards and assessing and controlling risks
  • How to establish an ISO 45001 OHS management system
  • How to maintain an ISO 45001 OHS management system
