Southpac is excited to announce that we are bringing over Bob Edwards, the H.O.P Coach from the U.S. to deliver a 2.5-day course on Human and Organisational Performance and Learning Teams. Course dates have been locked in as the 2nd-4th of August in Brisbane and will include a 1-day Introduction to Human and Organisational Performance and 1.5 days focused on Operational Learning and Learning Teams.
The course builds on the work of Sidney Dekker, Todd Conklin and Erik Hollnagel, some of which is introduced in other Southpac Courses (SCI, Safety Investigators). You may have heard Bob discussing Learning Teams on Todd Conklin’s Pre-Accident Podcast. This is undoubtedly a great new technique for reviewing and learning from unexpected outcomes and is relevant to all managers including operations, business improvement, quality and safety.
Human & Organisational Performance Fundamentals
The Fundamentals course takes participants into a working knowledge of the H.O.P. principles, terminology and methods. The basic H.O.P. principles covered in this class are:
1. People make errors
2. Error likely situations are predictable
3. Individual behaviors are influenced
4. Operational upsets can be avoided
5. Our response to failure matters
Key topics such as blame, error, operational drift, performance modes, and system thinking are covered in enough depth that the participants will be able to put into practice what they learn. Demonstrations are built into this class to show how common error and blame are. The class discussion moves the focus from error and blame to a more holistic, systems thinking, approach to failure. Emphasis is placed on the importance of operational learning and changing from a reactionary mode to more of a “learn and improve” approach. Thought provoking conversations are held in regards to challenging the notion of a root cause, a linear path to failure and an oversimplification of how failure happens. Participants will be able to apply class knowledge to their own organization to improve system stability, reliability and resilience and will see the importance of building better defenses and improving learning around events.
Operational Learning & Learning Teams
This class will introduce the participants to the basics of how to improve operational learning. It includes discussion around pre and post job briefings, event learning and non-event learning and how to improve the auditing process. Emphasis is placed on the “Learning Team” approach and the value of taking time to learn before taking action. Methods and techniques for coaching and facilitating “Learning Teams” as well as a discussion of what the learning sessions should look like are included. This training also includes a discussion with coaches about things that may hinder learning (i.e. biases, production pressure, etc.) as they attempt to conduct better operational learning at their site.
A practical Learning Team simulation is included within the course so you can take this straight back to your work place! The simulation will take the class through an example of how to actually conduct a Learning Team and is based upon a role playing scenario about a near miss event. Our goal is to build your confidence and capacity to conduct Learning Teams in your own workplace.
Bob Edwards understands humans. He’s been one for over 55 years! He helps organizations realize that human error is common and can even be expected in complex work environments. His approach is practical and easy to use. He brings real value to those who do the work and helps managers understand better the complexity of work and adaptive nature of workers. He leads organizations to improve operational discipline through empowerment of employees and forward accountability. Bob is high energy and engaging and the attendees to any of his training sessions will find that they have gone on a journey of learning and discovery during his presentation and at the same time acquired valuable methods and tools for solving complex problems in the workplace.
