Course Overview
Risk management is central to every aspect of aviation operations, from aircraft movements to ground support, refuelling, wildlife management and maintenance.
This course provides aviation personnel with the practical knowledge and tools needed to identify, assess, and manage operational and organisational risks in line with ISO 31000, ICAO Annex 19, and CASA Part 139 (MOS).
It bridges safety management, human factors, and operational practice, empowering participants to make informed, risk-based decisions that improve safety outcomes and organisational resilience.
Over two days, participants explore how to apply structured risk management processes to everyday operations, projects, and safety systems. Through case studies, simulations, and facilitated group work, they learn how to recognise hazards, analyse and evaluate risks and design effective treatments and controls.
The course integrates lessons from real-world incidents and emphasises communication, accountability and continuous improvement.
- Introduction to ISO 31000 and aviation safety frameworks
- Hazard identification and risk context in aerodrome and airside operations
- Likelihood, consequence, and risk evaluation
- Bow-tie analysis and control effectiveness
- Designing and documenting risk treatments
- Integrating risk with Safety Management Systems (SMS)
- Assurance, auditing and monitoring performance
- Risk reporting, analysis and communication
- Continuous improvement and safety culture
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Explain the principles, terminology and purpose of risk management within aviation operations
- Identify and assess operational hazards using structured risk analysis tools such as bow-tie and risk matrices
- Develop and document risk registers, treatment plans and assurance activities that align with aviation standards and enterprise SMS
- Evaluate and prioritise risks based on likelihood, consequence, and control effectiveness
- Design and verify practical controls that reduce risk to ALARP (As Low As Reasonably Practicable) levels
- Monitor, review, and communicate risks effectively across organisational levels and with regulators
- Integrate continuous improvement and learning into the organisation’s safety and risk management system
